“PREPARATION FOR PENTECOST”

This week we make a hard right turn toward the coming of the Pentecost by studying Acts 1. Here we look at the Jesus’ final meeting with his disciples and believers before his ascension to the Father in heaven. In this chapter, the Eleven used a man made device to complete the divine assignment of filling the vacancy created by the betrayal and death of Judas. We will see how the group of 120 followed Jesus’ final command and prepared for Pentecost.
Please prayerfully and carefully read ACTS Chapter 1 as you prepare to answer the following questions:
In Acts 1:1 the writer refers to his first book while addressing Theophilus. Who
wrote the book of Acts and what was the name of his first book? How do you know?
2. Who was Theophilus and what is the difference in the way he is addressed in the first book and here in Acts 1:1? Why the difference?
3. In Verse 2 the disciples are now called apostles. What is the difference between a disciple and an apostle?
4. In the King James Version, Acts 1:3 says Jesus gave his disciples “many infallible proofs” that he was alive after his resurrection. What were some of these “many convincing proofs” as the NIV has it? Where in Scriptures do you find them?
5. Why do you think Jesus told his disciples not to leave Jerusalem in Verse 4?
6. In Verse 4 what was the gift they were to wait for that the Father had promised?
7. In Verse 5 Jesus says John the Baptist baptized with water. Where in each of the four gospels do you find where John baptized with water and promised a future baptism by the Holy Spirit?
8. In Verse 6 the disciples asked Jesus when he would restore the kingdom to Israel and in Verse 7 Jesus told them it was none of their business. Why do you think the disciples continued to ask Jesus about restoring Israel as a kingdom? What do you think Jesus meant in Verse 7 when he said it was not for them to know the times or dates (times of seasons in KJV) when God would act in His own authority?
9. Acts 1:8 is so important because it gives the outline of Acts and Jesus’ instructions on how to be his witness. Read Acts 1:8 and tell us what it teaches us about how to spread the gospel today?
10. In Verses 9-11 the disciples saw Jesus ascend into heaven and were told by two angels that the “same Jesus” would return the “same way” one day. In John 16:5-15 Jesus gave the disciples the reasons he had to ascend to heaven. What did Jesus say in these verses and what do you think he meant?
11. The list of the Eleven Disciples in Verse 13 includes three names that appear in other gospels under different names. What are the other names in Scripture for Bartholomew, John son of Alphaeus, and Judas son of James? Where in the gospels do their other names appear?
12. Verse 14 says the disciples were in constant prayer together with “the women” and Jesus’ mother Mary and his brothers. Who do you think some of the women were in that Upper Room? What do you think the inclusion of women in the Upper Room means for the involvement of women in the church today?
13. Although, it is clear in Verse 14 that women were with the apostles, Peter only addressed the “brothers.” Why do you think Peter counted the women out? Which Bible versions does Peter address the “brothers and sisters” in Verse 16?
14. Why do you think Verse 18 says Judas bought a field with the money he received for betraying Jesus when Matthew 27 says Judas returned the money and threw it in the temple and left?
15. Which two Psalms is Peter quoting in Verse 20 to show that the Scriptures gave direction on why Judas had to be replaced?
16. What were the criteria Peter used in Verse 21 to choose someone to replace Judas? The apostles used the system of casting lots to select Matthias to replace Judas. What was casting lots and where did it come from in Scripture?
