CHARITY BIBLE STUDY ASSIGNMENT

WEDNESDAY, JULY 28, 2010 – ACTS 7 & 8

ACTS 7

Startup: When you get to heaven, and you meet Stephen, what’s the first question you’d like to ask him?
SEEING WHAT’S THERE
1. Who are the people playing an important part in this chapter?
2. Imagine again you were helping to produce a film based on the book of Acts. To film the events recorded in chapter 7, summarize all the scenes to be included, and mention also any special kinds of scenery, background music, lighting effects, etc., that you would use to meaningfully portray the action.
3. EYE FOR DETAIL—From what you recall seeing in this chapter, try answering the following question without looking at your Bible: For each of these Old Testament characters, tell whether or not his name is mentioned in Stephen’s speech to the Sanhedrin: Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, Samuel, David, Solomon, and Elijah. (See verses 8,9,20,40, and 45-47.)
CAPTURE THE ESSENCE
4. From what you see in Acts, how would you describe Stephen’s spiritual gifts and his relationship with God?
FOR LIFE TODAY
5. ACTION HERITAGE: Think again about Stephen’s example in this chapter. What is it about his character and commitment that challenge you most?
FOR GOING DEEPER
6. Stephen’s blistering indictment in verse 51 might well have reminded his listeners of the Lord’s words to Israel in Jer 4:4 and 9:26. As you look at those Old Testament verses, consider what that association might have done to make the Jewish leaders even angrier than they already were.

ACTS 8

Startup: When you get to heaven, and you meet the Ethiopian whom Philip spoke with, what’s the first question you’d like to ask him?
SEEING WHAT’S THERE
1. Who are the people playing an important part in this chapter?
2. Once again, take a “walk” together through the incidents that happen in this chapter. Using your imagination, talk about the kinds of sights, smells, sounds, and feelings you might experience.
3. EYE FOR DETAIL—From what you recall seeing in this chapter, try answering the following question without looking at your Bible: Who buried Stephen? (See verse 2.)
CAPTURE THE ESSENCE
4. In your own words, how would you summarize the victory the church achieved in this chapter, through the power of the Holy Spirit? How was it strategically important for the continued growth of the church?
FOR LIFE TODAY
5. Here in chapter 8, what appropriate patterns and principles do you see for evangelism in the church today?
FOR GOING DEEPER
6. In verse 3, look at the activities of Saul the persecutor; then refer to Paul the apostle’s memories of those days in 1 Cor 15:9-10. How did Paul’s earlier career impact his later one?
