THE DIVINITY OF JESUS CHRIST

By: Rev. Nelson B. Rivers, III, Pastor

You will find below an excerpt from my seminary paper The Doctrine of the Person and Work of Jesus Christ which presents some of my beliefs on the divinity of Jesus Christ. Also review the included notes from lectures by Dr. Eddie Soto from my Systematic Theology III Class at Erskine Theological Seminary and Scriptures to answer our Bible Study questions for this week.
This is my statement of belief on the
Doctrine of the Person and Work of Jesus Christ:
I believe that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God and he is the second person in the Holy Trinity, known as the Godhead, and freely took upon himself the nature of human beings, yet without sin; that he was fully human and fully divine and that he did die from crucifixion for our sins and was resurrected from the dead to save all mankind from their sins, and that he is now in heaven with God the Father and shall return one day to complete the perfect union of God with his beloved creation which is humankind.
THE DIETY OF CHRIST
As articulated in the opening phrase of my statement of belief on the Doctrine of the Person and Work of Jesus Christ, I believe the Bible teaches that Jesus was the Son of God and was literally God who came to mankind in human flesh. Stanley J. Grenz, in his book Theology for the Community of God, opens Chapter 9 with this quote from Acts 2:36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” 1 Here Grenz establishes that as Christians we find in Jesus “the self-revelation of God – God incarnate.”2 This is foundational to my beliefs as a Christian. I agree with Grenz when he writes “The Doctrine of Christ lies at the heart of the Christian faith.”3
NOTES FROM DR. EDDIE SOTO ON THE DIETY OF CHRIST

  • Very controversial
  • Most crucial to the Christian faith, must be believed by ALL Christians
  • Christian faith states in some mysterious way God came in human form
  • Faith rests on Jesus being God in human flesh=INCARNATION; you can’t be a biblical Christian without the incarnation
  • Christ was tempted
  • Christ bled
  • Christ ate
  • Jesus claimed to forgive sins
  • Scriptural witness states God will be the Judge, yet in Matthew 25:31-46 Jesus is the one who comes and judges humanity
  • Exodus 20:8-11 God says that the Sabbath is sacred, yet in Mark 2:27-28 Jesus gives the correct interpretation of the Sabbath
  • John 10:30; John 14:7-9 Jesus claims a unique relationship with the father
  • Jesus claims pre-existence John 8:58; Exodus 3:13-15 “I Am” speaking to God’s eternity
  • Jesus considers himself the giver of life; Gospel of John has 7 “I Am” sayings; “I am the resurrection and the life”
  • Gospel of Matthew quotes the OT the most to prove Jesus is the messiah; Mark proves that Jesus was the suffering servant (Mark
  • 10:45 key verse); Luke is to prove that Jesus is a real man/human being; John is to prove that Jesus is the divine/the Son of God. John
  • begins in eternity “In the beginning”; Hebrews 1 is emphatic about Jesus’ deity (the superiority of Jesus of the angels, Moses, the
  • sacrifices, high priest); Hebrews 1:8, “your throne O God” from the book of Psalms that the writer of Hebrews is applying to Jesus
  • The term LORD. In the New Testament Jesus is called LORD from the Greek work “kyrios” Adoni (Hebrew) is translated into Greek as
  • kyrios
  • In the New Testament there are references applying Jesus as Lord; example, book of Acts where Peter calls Jesus as LORD; “Jesus
  • Christ LORD and SAVIOR”=”Jesus is my God”
  • Jesus’ Resurrection was final proof of his deity

What are the implications of the Deity of Christ?

    1. We can have real knowledge of God (John 14:9)
    2. It also implies that redemption is available to us-all sinners; Jesus is the life and giver and sustainer of life
    3. God and humankind have been reunited-not an angel, but it was God himself who crossed chiasm created by sin
    4. Worship of Christ is appropriate; in the same degree, Jesus is just as worthy of praise and adoration as the Father
